Few parish churches in the UK are as large: it is bigger than a third of England's cathedrals, and it is regarded as a masterpiece of Gothic building. It was first a collegiate church. When the monasteries were dissolved it was passed over as the seat of a bishop, but it survived to serve the parish, losing only its chapter house and the adjoining church of St Martin among its major parts.
